Progressive attorney and Wisconsin Assembly candidate celebrates CA decision as turning point; vows to fight for marriage equality and Wisconsin Equal Rights Amendment.

MADISON – As news of U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn R. Walker’s ruling striking down California’s marriage ban ricocheted across the country, Ben Manski announced his support of the decision, and recommitted himself to the movement against anti-LBGTQ discrimination in Wisconsin.

"With this decision, the tide has turned. California's Northern District obliterated any claim that any government enjoys a rational basis for enforcing marriage inequality. As Madison's newest representative, I will build on this momentum by advancing an Equal Rights Amendment to the Wisconsin Constitution." says Manski who is running to serve the 77th Assembly District.

Ben Manski is an attorney in the public interest, representing housing activists, non-profits, coops, students, and environmental advocates. He is an active member of the National Lawyers Guild and of the State Bar of Wisconsin, where he serves on the Legislative Committee of the Individual Rights & Responsibility Section, as well as on that section’s elected board of directors.

"I just read Judge Walker's ruling," says Manski. "This was rightly decided, and as importantly, it was decided on the right basis. This is how federalism is supposed to work. Fundamental human and civil rights are universal, and guaranteed at the highest levels of government; states and localities may go above the floor set by our national constitution, but not below it."

Ben Manski is a public interest attorney and pro-democracy advocate. He is a frequent guest on WPR’s “Week in Review.” Manski is the executive director of the Liberty Tree Foundation, as well as principal attorney at Manski Law, LLC, co-owner of the green business network PosiPair.com, a member of the Sociology faculty at MATC (AFT 6100), and an associate fellow with the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C..
