PRESS CONFERENCE ~ 4PM TODAY ~ Madison West High School on Ash Street side

MADISON – At a press conference at 4pm this afternoon, MTI President Mike Lipp will announce the strong support of Madison teachers for Ben Manski for Wisconsin's 77th Assembly District. MTI's Political Action Committee, MTI VOTERS, took a hard look at the candidates in that competitive race, and recommended Manski as the outstanding choice for Madison's schools. This recommendation was overwhelmingly affirmed by the MTI membership in the subsequent voting process.

MTI recognizes Manski for his long history of activism in every labor struggle and school funding referenda of which the union has been an active participant. He is a teacher at Madison College, and comes from a family of educators. Manski is a vocal leader in the fight for a long overdue overhaul in unfair school funding system. He is well versed in education issues, and has been a fighter for public sector workers.

As Manski says, "Public education is under a deliberate and constant assault by Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce and other big business lobbyists. They have used our legislature to starve our schools, and then, to force-feed teachers, students, and parents a regimen of vouchers, testing, union-busting, and generational debt. The price paid in this assault on our youth is unacceptable, and I am committed to fully funding our public schools."

Manski is a product of the Madison schools and attended Randall, Van Hise and West, all in District 77. MTI President Mike Lipp notes that "Ben is one of the most remarkable and driven students I have ever taught," Lipp continued, "His work over the years on behalf of educators has been equally impressive. It will be great to see his intelligence and determination in the Assembly."

Manski's record of activism on the behalf of teachers and students extends over two decades with his involvement in Democratizing Education Network, UW Teaching Assistants, Books not Bombs National Student Strike, 180/Movement for Democracy and Education, Associated Students of Madison, Democracy Teach-Ins, Mobilization for a People’s Budget, and, as a West High student, Students for Education Reform.

Manski will be a principled voice for the 77th District. MTI proudly affirms his candidacy.
